LA BUENA VIDA NEWSLETTER SEPTEMBER 2004

LA BUENA VIDA EN BUENA VISTA

"The good life in Buena Vista........."
Saludos from the Valdez Family!

September 2004

September brought us plenty of rain, but thankfully no hurricanes showed up this year. The hillsides and mountains have turned a lush shade of green, and yellow and fuchsia flowers are growing everywhere. Fall is always the prettiest time of year here as the East Cape is transformed into a tropical thorn forest. This past month the weather began to cool off, with daytime temperatures in the high 80s and low 90s. The water remained crystal clear and in the mid-80s. The fishing rocked. Anglers caught amazing numbers of dorado and tuna, plus plenty of sailfish, snapper, skipjacks and several blue and striped marlin. According to Axel, this month reminded him of when he was a kid and the hotel was closed for the summer. They had the entire ocean to themselves and an abundance of fish!

A large group visited us from Okuma Reels and we also hosted a seminar for a group of American dentists. A first-time, “We’ll be baaaack” group of 12 out of California was headed up by Don Martinez. They were here the 23rd to the 27th and scored some great catches. Read about our 10th annual Employee Tournament in “Fish Stories.”

Esaul wants you to know that from the 12th to 19th of January he will be hosting a first-ever combination Hunting/Fishing Tour. Sign up and you’ll fish for 3 days and then head over to Los Mochis on the mainland for another 3 days of duck hunting. Click here for further information

There are some new flights to Los Cabos Airport that you may not be aware of. Take a minute to check them out. Continental Airlines: Now operates13 non-stop flights weekly from Houston. Also they continue to fly from Newark, NJ. Frontier Airlines: Now operates 3 non-stops per week to Cabo on Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday from Denver. They will increase to daily flights from November 7th, 2004 to January 8, 2005 and possibly beyond. Aeromexico: Now operates 4 times a week from Ontario, CA on Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday. They also fly from Sand Diego non-stop daily. Delta: Daily non-stop service from Atlanta will be reinstated on December 4th, 2004. United Airlines: Commencing daily service from San Francisco on December 16th, 2004 and 3 times a week from Denver on December 18, 2004. American Airlines: Operates daily non-stop from Chicago (November 1st to April 15th). Also operates 3 daily non-stops from Dallas through May 30 with 15 non-stops a week in June through January 2005. There is a daily non-stop flight from Los Angeles, and 2 flights on Saturday. America West: Operates 3 daily non-stops from Phoenix. But the good news is that they are commencing a new service from San Diego on November 1st, 2004 with four flights a week (Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday). And that isn’t all; they are starting a direct flight from Oakland, CA on December 18th, 2004. This will fly only once a week for now. Alaska Airlines: Operates 3 daily non-stop flights from Los Angeles, 1 from San Diego, 1 from San Francisco and 1 from San Jose, CA. Mexicana: Offers a daily non-stop flight from Los Angeles. AeroCalifornia: Offers a daily non-stop flight from Los Angeles. Northwest: Offers a daily non-stop flight from Minneapolis once a week from December 3rd to April 4th. Apple Charters: Currently operating a weekly charter flight from Chicago and will operate another starting in February 2005 from Detroit. Are we on the map or what?!

The bridge at Santa Anita, just north of the airport has recently been completed and construction is going gangbusters on the bridges being built over the arroyos at Las Cuevas just south of the hotel and Buenos Aires to the north. They will be done before the storms come next summer, so we won’t ever have to worry about roads washing out!

Once again, we thank all of you for your continued patronage over the years, and we hope to see you very soon!

There were several responses to the request to create a drink recipe for the Agave Sunset, named after Ann Hazard’s latest book. She and husband Terry had a great time testing the recipes and thank all of you who submitted them for doing so. The winner is Suzanna Colyer (no, for those of you who know Ann and Suzanna are close friends: the contest was not fixed! She definitely tried the hardest and submitted 3 different recipes!) Check out the winning recipe in “La Cocina.”

We have some dates that you may want to keep in mind, it will be useful for next month's "Contest of the Month!" Tune into the Outdoor Channel for great shows about our resort.

"Tuna Terror" will run on Monday evening, November 15, 2004, at 7:00 p.m. PDT and "A Shining Jewel" will rerun on Monday evening, November 29, 2004. same time.

Fish Stories & Adventure Stories

Every year in late August and early September we have our employee fishing tournament. Two teams a day go out for 2 weeks in groups of 3 and 4. This year’s tournament winners were food servers Eva and Claudia, who fished with Eva’s 2 daughters. The winning fish was a 286-pound blue marlin. Congratulations, ladies!

Juan Carlos (the smiling security guard and driver), Carlos Belmontes and Ramiro the bartender came in a second with a 240 pound blue, and Max and Manual (airport drivers) and Brenda (masseuse) came in third with a 210 pound blue.

In the News

This month story is about a great captain that has mentioned retiring for the end of this year. We hope to convince him for another year, but this year he seems to be more certain about it.
