Summer is in full swing down here. The weather on the East Cape is in the 90s, the water is clear, warm and in the 80s, and the fishing is beyond belief. This summer we have a huge lineup of special events, tournaments and other fun things happening at the resort. Bookings are way up this year, a sign that all of you are traveling again, and enjoying sharing time with us at our very special Jewel of the East Cape. We welcome you, as always, with open arms.

We are happy to have seen so many friends this past month. Mr. Ed & Marty Geib, who have been to our resort since my dad opened, Mr. Bob & Leslie Kunde and  Stan & Doris Long, they were all celebrating their wedding anniversaries (50, 40, 40 year anniversary respectively). It was an honor and we joined their celebration.  Also we hosted two groups of friends from the mainland, Sonora and Sinaloa states, it is very nice to see friends coming from other parts of Mexico. Our good friend Mr. Bisk with all of his friends from Utah. Long time friend Mr. Addis, the Reese family, Mr. Strickland with his private tournament, Mr. Croft, who we missed for the past few years, and who I am sure will be back soon, since he fought as many dorados as possible on the fly. It was so nice to see Mr. and Mrs. Paulson with, who we consider our adopted triplets sons and daughter. Mrs. Fields so nice that she joined us for some relaxing time, before their up coming Dgzochen community retreat. And it was very nice also to see Tim Madden who is recovering from surgery. And so many other friends that if I continue this newsletter would not end. Thank you to these friends and so many more for continuing visiting, and we hope to see your smiling, sunburned faces this summer.

Little known tidbits of Hotel Buena Vista's History

Did you know … 

That we are actively promoting local mountain, water, shopping and cultural tours to nearby places? Yes, we are and we’re going to tell you about a new one every month. This month’s special tour is the Giggling Marlin Snorkel, Lunch and Beach Combing Tour. There is a new Giggling Marlin (owned by the same people as the legendary restaurant/bar in Cabo San Lucas). It sits on the shore of pristine Bahía de los Sueños (Bay of Dreams), formerly Bahía de los Muerto (Bay of the Dead) just to the east of La Paz and about an hour and half north of here by cruiser.

Yes, this is also the answer to last month’s contest question. It’s also one of our newest and most favorite tours. You and your group of up to six can spend the day on one of our fishing boats. However, the focus here won’t be fishing (although no one will mind if you do a little inshore trolling!). Your captain will head north along the coast, to Punta Pescadero where you can anchor and do some snorkeling. Feel like beachcombing? He’ll take you further in and you can hunt for shells. Then you will cruise north, to the edge of Isla Ceralvo and then back into Bahía Los Sueños, where you’ll anchor. Snorkel or hitch a ride in a panga to the Giggling Marlin Restaurant. Under a beachfront palapa, enjoy fabulous food, try their (in)famous Skip and Go Naked cocktails and then motor back to your boat for a leisurely ride home. Check with Angel Ortiz at the Boat Desk any evening after 6:30 to arrange your tour.

Contest of the Month!

If you’ve been to the resort, you’ve seen the big ribbonfish (it’s a 12 foot sea serpent, basically) on the north wall of the Restaurante El Navegante. Okay, how did he get here and when did he appear?

The Marlin Rodeo

June’s really big deal started with the arrival of the fleet’s newest boat, the Dusty B III (or LA TRES as we call it). Esaul Valdez and Captain Vicente Cosio motored it down from San Felipe to Buena Vista, arriving on June 10^th. After two slow days, the fishing took off. In four days, 26 striped marlin were caught on this 31-foot Blackman cruiser with twin 6 cylinder Cummins diesel engines. The boat is fast, no doubt about it.

On Monday, June 14^th,  Mr. Bill Johnson and sons Bryan and Kyle (13 and 10 years old respectively) and Mr. Milt Patzkowski with son Kurt (9 year old) caught 10 marlin, and the bite started right after 12:00 o'clock, can you imagine that?. That’s more marlin in a single day than Vicente had caught in over three years! These boys didn’t have a clue how good a day they had! This was a summer break trip never to be forgotten. And we hope they will not take another 2 years to return to brake this phenomenal record. 

Owner Togo Hazard and his grandson Derek Tresize got here on the 14^th, joined up with son-in-law Terry Hauswirth and friend, Kim Eady and proceeded to fish their brains out. In the next week they caught another 18 striped marlin, two sails and too many tuna and dorado to count! This boat is not only fast, it’s lucky!  This rampage was going on down close to two hours boat drive. Quite worth it. There were big bait balls and marlin jumping everywhere. For those four days, the place just went off. Togo said, “There were about 70 boats going crazy in an area less than a third the size of the bay in front of the hotel. Big fancy Cabo boats, pangas and cruisers all darting around, most with simultaneous hookups! Vicente drove my boat like it was a jet ski, turning on a dime and telling us all to hang on for dear life. It was the best fishing of my life.” And he’s 82 and quite a fisherman, he fought and caught a 309 lbs blue marlin, while standing up, just last summer. 

Another great story was the one sent in by Sam Briggs and family, since they were out in a snorkel trip aboard our pontoon boat. They ended up hooking up to a 90 lbs striped marlin  just off of La Rivera! come and see the picture and the whole story sent by our long time friend Sam (click here for picutre and story)

And then … on the 23^rd Mike Anderson, with dad and brothers aboard the Carleste. They caught a nice 475-pound blue marlin (with no bill) close to La Rivera as well, while trolling a live tuna! (click here for picture and story)

La Cocina

EL  NAVEGANTE’S FAMOUS FILET OF FISH SAUTÉED IN GARLIC & BUTTER (Filete de Pescado al Ajo y Mantequilla)

For each serving:

2 filets of fish (pull out your frozen fish from down here)

4 tbsp butter

5 cloves garlic, minced

salt and pepper

In a fry pan, melt the butter and garlic. Sprinkle salt and pepper on both sides of the fish. Sautée in frying pan, cooking on both sides until done, about 5 minutes.

Serve it like we do, with white rice and vegetables on the side.
