LA BUENA VIDA NEWSLETTER MAY 2004

LA BUENA VIDA EN BUENA VISTA

"The good life in Buena Vista........."
Saludos from the Valdez Family!

June 2004

Summer has come at last! The kids are almost out of school, the weather here on the East Cape is hot and sunny, the water is clear and warm and the fishing is awesome. This summer we have a huge lineup of special events, tournaments and other fun things happening at the resort. Bookings are way up this year, a sign that all of you are traveling again, and enjoying sharing time with us at our very special Jewel of the East Cape. We welcome you, as always, with open arms.

May’s fishing was spectacular, with an average week netting over 200 tuna (mostly in the 35 to 40 pound range), 40 striped marlin, 25 to 30 dorado, nearly 50 rooster fish, 35 to 40 snappers and a myriad of other smaller fish. Around the pool and on the beach, the weather has been so nice that no one ever wants to go indoors to take a siesta! Also, we had several special events and large groups joining us, which enabled us to have outdoor buffets nearly every night, and one one occasion, a beach barbecue and bonfire.

Among the groups that visited us this years is The Western Fishing Folly, organized by Natalie Rucinski. it was a great party as we celebrated their 20th year anniversary of being with us every year. Natalie is daughter to Mr. Mike Rucinski, who will always be among us.

And there were the Guys from Portland Cement Company who are also in their 23rd visit. This year was very special, as Mr. Gordon Thurner was celebrating his retirement from the company. It was a very special and emotional farewell dinner. And of course there were many good memories to be tell.

All indications point toward this summer being a memorable one. We have a July special for kids, several great fishing tournaments and … BIG NEWS … from August 3rd through 7th, we will be hosting the 4th Annual East Cape Bisbee Tournament! This is a first for us and we’re excited! Book now and sign up to be on Hotel Buena Vista Beach Resort’s Bisbee 2004 team!

Once again, we thank all of you for your continued patronage over the years, and we hope to see your smiling, sunburned faces this summer!

Did You Know?

Little known tidbits of Hotel Buena Vista's History

Did you know …

The largest waterfall in Baja California Sur is located just northwest of Santiago, less than 40 minutes from the hotel by car? La Cola de la Zorra (the Tail of the Fox), is its name. The water tumbles down more than 40 feet down a steep cliff into a pool that is over 20 feet deep, and it doesn’t dry up during the dry season. After parking the car, you can take a short, easy hike on a good trail down to the falls. It’s less than a 10 minute walk. There, the braver among you can dive off the rocks (about 35 feet high) into the cool, clear water. Now that sounds like a real treat on a hot summer day!

To find out about arranging a day trip to visit this waterfall, check with Angel Ortiz at the Fishing Desk any evening after 6:30.

Contest of the Month!
Answer this one:

This is a two-part question again. There is a bay about an hour and 15 minutes north of here by boat that is just to the east of La Paz. It used to be called Bahía de los Muertos (or Bay of the Dead). It has a new name now with better curb appeal. What is the bay’s new name? Second part of this question: What is the name of the new restaurant on the shore of this bay where a panga will pick you up from your boat and take you in for a great lunch and some “Skip and Go Nakeds.” (That is their signature drink!)

If you know the answer to this question, email it to us right away at axel@hotelbuenavista.com and you will win a Seafood Platter for two with a bottle of wine for dinner, here at Hotel Buena Vista Beach Resort.

Fish Stories & Adventure Stories

What is it about fishing anyway? It’s one of those sports you either totally love (and will happily go to great lengths to do), or you find it utterly incomprehensible. As in … why would anyone want to spend all day …? We all know the drill. For those non-fishing folks among us and for those who wish we could make our spouses/kids understand, please know that it’s not just about riding around in a boat trailing lines behind you in hopes that a big fish will find your lure/bait irresistible and turn out to be the biggest, fightin’est fish of the day/week/year/millennium. Nope. It’s not just about the beer either. Or the sun on the water, the jumping rays and the dancing dolphins. It’s not about winning (or losing) at card games. Or the camaraderie.

Well, okay. Yeah, it’s all of that … and more. Now that we have that straight, we have news for the non-fisher-folks. There’s a lot more to here than fish. Give us a call, shoot us an email. Check out our website. You’ll be surprised at the adventures awaiting you here on the East Cape!
