July 2005

June was spectacular in every way here on the East Cape. The hotel was amazingly busy all month long, and good times were had by all. The water finally began to warm up (a little late this year) and was in the low to mid-80s all month. Daytime highs ranged from the high-80s to the mid-90s, which as we all know, is perfect fishing weather down here! The fishing was awesome all month long. The tuna arrived big time, with a total caught of 820! (Think lots of sashimi!) The striped marlin were prolific also, with 444 caught (and 95% released). The first three blues of the season showed up mid-month and we are their way expecting a lot more to find our lines throughout this month. Wahoos came in early this year, with six nice ones caught. Our anglers reeled in over 150 dorado in June, more than 40 roosters, 13 sailfish, 90 snapper, 25 Jack Crevalle and over 100 other fish. It was quite a month!

So many special friends returned to stay with us in June that there is no way we could list you all here. Besides, we would likely forget someone, and we don’t want to do that. Suffice it to say, we enjoyed seeing so many familiar faces and getting to know so many new people too. Thank you all for coming!

Little known tidbits of Hotel Buena Vista's History

Did you know?

The question for last month’s contest was: How many rooms did the Hotel Buena Vista Beach Resort have when it opened in 1976? The answer is 13, although Chuy didn’t (as is typical in the hotel business) use the number 13. The numbers on the rooms were 1 to 14. The policy for guests at that time was this: “Just look for an empty room and let us know which one you’re in!” Very laid back for sure. The rooms were located in three different buildings on the upper portion of the property. (The lower portion was vacant back then.) There were three rooms in the main house, six in the back where the administrative offices are now (behind the reception area). The last four rooms were in the building that now houses the massage and spa services. Things have definitely changed in the last 29 years….

Contest of the Month!

As you already know our resort was started by Jesus “Chuy”Valdez and wife Imelda with great help from Chuy’s mom, Rafaela Valdez. Also involved on the ground floor were Melecio and later Cirilo. The question was how many rooms did Chuy start with and how were the rooms distributed?  The winner was Cynthia Marcum and the answer was 13. Congratulations Cynthia! You have won a seafood platter for two and a bottle of wine to enjoy on your up coming visit with us.

This month’s question is: The resort’s two major bartenders, Ricardo and Ramiro, have been with the hotel for a long time. What is unique about their relationship and how long has each of them been with us?

Because June was such a busy month, we have four Fish Stories this month instead of the usual one.

From June 2^nd through 6^th, Reese Allen, Pat Lowery and their group from Burlingame, CA hosted their first-ever BASFT (Ba... As... Fishing Tournament). Fifteen of them put together a small three-day tournament. They had paintings, professional pictures and other art for prizes and the hotel donated a free vacation at the resort for the tournament’s winner. We did this because these “bad as...” raised $1600 in entry fees for their tournament and donated it all to the Orphanage in Santiago. It was an extremely emotional experience when the guys arrived to the orphanage to deliver the donation to the kids and the administration personal.

Brian Bisk has been coming here for about seven years, he started with his dad. This year he brought a group of 24 from his now home state of Utah. They stayed with us for four nights, from June 3^rd to 7thy and fished their brains out. To accommodate their party, we set up a private dining area for them on the patio in front of the bar.

Then there was the wild bunch from Los Mochis. Twenty people came over across the Sea of Cortez on their own boats, although a few fished on our boats. The day they caught their 350-pound blue was the day the party really got going. They hired Mariachis, threw them in the pool and were serenaded by wet, semi-submerged musicians while they hooted and hollered and sang along from their perches at the swim-up bar. Outrageous. You bet!

June 27^th to July 1^st Ronnie Kovach and his TV crew,  were here to film Kovach’s famous “Fishing Expedition School.” The footage from this has been airing all over Southern California recently. More footage will follow this month. The guys also gave several seminars and he implemented the use of the a Megabite lure to bottom fish, which is now being picked up by some of our best captains.

La Cocina

PASTEL DE TRES LECHES — THREE MILK CAKE

This very traditional Mexican cake is not only delicious, but elegant. It will make a perfect ending for any special dinner. Rafaela, our famous pastry chef provided this recipe for you. It’s one of her most requested, and it rocks! Serves eight and takes about two hours to prepare.

Cake

10 eggs, separated

¼ cup sugar

2 cups flour

2 tbsp baking soda

¼ cup warm milk (microwave for 20 seconds)

Crema de Tres Leches

10 oz can evaporated milk

10 ounce can sweetened condensed milk

10 oz. can crema media ácida (no substituting on this one; try Nestle at www.mexgrocer.com if you can’t find it)

1 tbsp vanilla extract

¼ cup brandy

Whipped cream for topping

Preheat oven to 450°. Cream the egg yolks with sugar in medium bowl. Mix in flour and baking soda, then the warm milk.

In a separate bowl, beat the egg whites until stiff peaks are formed. Mix with other cake ingredients. Place in a greased angel food cake pan and bake for 25 minutes. Remove from oven and cool.

Put all ingredients for tres leches except whipping cream in blender and blend until creamy. Remove cake from pan and place on platter. Drizzle the crema de tres leches over the cake. Top with whipped cream.
