Bisbee's East Cape Offshore Tops $300,000.00 Cash Purse
2006 event sets new record for area tournaments.

Hello to everyone,

The first Bisbee's tournament of 2006 completed August 5th at Baja California's

East Cape and bested last year's purse by almost 25% with an impressive $300,240.00. Hosted once again by the Valdez family at their beautiful Buena Vista Beach Resort, a total of 54 teams and 248 anglers competed for billfish, tuna and dorado.

Fishing was strong this year with 172 billfish released, including 32 blue, 128 striped marlin and 12 sailfish with a 97.7% release ratio.

Keith Jones, fishing aboard the 31' Luhrs Mi Corazon owned by Andrew Hughes and captained by Antonio Lucero Castillo caught the winning fish, a 418.0 lb. blue marlin, earning the team $152,411.00. The second place team was Las Mananitas, a 36' Rampage owned by Andres Toro and captained by Mauricio Castro Angel. Juan Castano caught the 341.0 lb. blue marlin on the final day of the tournament for $74,334.00.

 

The top Release team was Mahitini with 2100 points and an impressive 21 striped marlin releases. The top dorado at 54.8 lbs. was caught by John Lattimore aboard the Cowboy VII and the top tuna, 132.9 lbs., was caught by Bob Hardesty aboard the Makaira.

This year's format was expanded to include Daily Jackpot categories for tuna and dorado in addition to the traditional overall awards for these species. The new categories paid off for Cowboy VII, Lisa and Tournament Hunter who won cash awards solely for participating in the new categories and weighing in the largest tuna or dorado of individual days.

The dates for the upcoming Cabo tournaments are October 20-22 for the Los Cabos Offshore Tournament/Pete Lopiccola Billfish Tournament and October 24-28 for the Black & Blue. Our Cabo host resort is the spectacular Cabo Villas Beach Resort which is working in conjunction the Baja Cantina Dockside, Baja Cantina Beach Club and the Puerto Paraiso Entertainment Plaza to present event functions.

Water Temperature: Water temperature continues to be nice and hot, with some rain last week, it just made everything better for this week tournament action.

 

Air Temperature: Well, we did pass the 100 mark this week, with temperature up to 105, yes it was hot, but we still have some breeze and some clouds help get through the day.

 

Fishing Spots and Distance: Big money tournament week, many boats many directions, all over our bay.  

 

Off-shore Fishing: Plenty of stripers not so many blues, but very exiting event. Tuna up to 134 lbs, dorado at 54 lbs and a nice 418 lbs blue.   

 

In-shore Fishing: Almost everything was off-shore fishing this past week, but those guests who did fish the in-shore found plenty of action on many species.

 

Bait Used: Mostly caballito some mackerel too, but captains are preferring the ballyhoo.

 

Highlight of the Week: Nice tournament week, many blues, but only two that qualified, so many striped marlin that participants were shaking them off, some nice tuna, some nice dorado everything came to place for a great tournament. See you next year!!!
