It is mid-morning as I write this. I am sitting in my office overlooking the azure blue Sea of Cortez watching a panga and a cruiser, both about 50 yards out looking for roosterfish. A man is fly-fishing from the beach. There is only one thing missing from this idyllic scene: People. News reports – blown totally out of proportion – have caused many guests to cancel their reservations, to just stay home or to spread rumors that the sky is falling and disaster awaits anyone who sets foot in Mexico. Fictions vs. Fact. You decide.

The sky is falling.

The sun still comes up every morning and sets at night. Marlin are biting (sourdough), dorado are great, if you find something floating and we’re starting to see both sailfish (4 released in one day by 3 Hermanos last week) and swordfish. Roosters are right off our beach. Both our pool and our margaritas are cool. Business throughout the world is definitely off, but we’ve seen an upturn and a few long weekends are nearly full.

The flu is all over Mexico.

Angel Cordova, Mexico’s Minister of Health, confirmed that the beach resorts of Puerto Vallarta, Los Cabos, Cozumel and Zihuatanejo continue to report no cases of influenza. States with no reported cases of flu include Baja California Sur and Coahuila. The United States leads with 3,352 cases followed by Mexico with 2,592 laboratory confirmed human cases of infection.

Crime is rampant.

If you look for trouble anywhere you can probably find it. Baja’s East Cape is safer than most places in the world because criminals have no place to go. There is one road in and out. Our hotel resort (and those of our local competitors) attracts fishermen, Scuba divers, families, retirees, honeymooners, and other vacationers. Not drug dealers!

Airline prices are crazy.
