Bisbee Busy
Bisbee
As we write this, the famous Bisbee East Cape
Tournament is just finishing with 54 boats and
our hotel/resort is booming with anglers,
friends, family and officials. Welcome All!
We have at least two boats in top contention
with one winner already in the books. A team
including 87 year old Togo Hazard (aka Sr.
Togo), Mike McGrath and Esaul
Valdez representing the hotel won the Second
Day with a 48.5-pound dorado and a prize of
$9,000, slightly more than $185 per pound! Six
of our hotel boats are participating with
Lilliana currently in Second Place and Alegria
in Third Place in the Release Category.
Of particular
interest is that the Bisbee Family brought in a
group of satellite experts. Ten boats in the
tourney were fitted with satellite tracking
systems and you could watch things unfold by
going to (http://www.trackinginternational.com/tracking)
stay tune for next year event and cheer your
captain.
Currently, the tournament leader is sitting
pretty with a 310 pound blue marlin. Continued
good luck to everyone! We’ll give you guys the
details once the official numbers are in.
Up-Up-Update
April, May and June is usually the best three
month stretch of the year, but ’09 will be
remembered as the lowest hotel occupancy and
boat charters we had ever seen in our quiet
corner of the world. Luckily, all of that is
behind us and the rest of the summer all the way
to October reservations look terrific.
Strange how things work out in the fishing game:
we had calm waters with swarms of striped marlin
and dorado and even better in-shore fishing, a
little slow in the tuna, but still. Go figure.

Weather-wise it was unusually cool into May when
we even had some mornings that could be
classified as “cold.” That continued even into
the late days of June, but soon soared into our
standard beautiful summer.

Easter Week
Looking back a few months, our Easter Week was
filled with many local guests from Cabo, San
Jose and other nearby towns. It’s become
something of a tradition for Baja families to
come for a few days or a weekend of memories,
reunions and a bit of contemplative solitude at
the hotel. It was wonderful seeing returning
children now with their own families and even
grandchildren.
God willing,
we’ll see you all again in Easter Week 2010.
Couples & Groups
The spring months found several small groups of
couples just coming to relax and enjoy what we
have to offer. Mrs. Maggie Strunk
organized a group for four couples from Redondo
Beach, Calif. Also our good friend and
tournament organizer Mr. Reese Allen and
Gary Lindner with friend Neil
Sasinowski, winner of last year BAFT
tournament left their fishing tackle at home to
come down with their wives for some R&R.
Scott Draggoo
and our cousin Caroline Alejandre
traveled South of the Border with other two
other couples, and even though the guys went out
fishing, the girls stayed back and enjoyed the
hotel amenities and services. The same also
applied to our old friends from New Mexico,
Caroline and Jack Woody plus their
friends who also enjoyed a few days of fishing
while the ladies enjoyed exercising on the beach
in the morning, refreshing beach bath and then
coffee and breakfast. They all were among the
first to sign up for the “Vacation Magic
Program” when it came out, as they had used
it before and they know there is no better
promotion by us. Thank you.
Pudge and Women
Fly-Flingers
Famed Alaskan guide and trip organizer Cecilia
“Pudge” Kleinkauf brought her group of
fly-fishing girls, who were booked by our
partners and long time promoters Baja on the
Fly, and were among the first guests to work
with Lance Peterson, our new saltwater
fly-fishing guide.
Pudge’s group of eight women came from all over
the country in early April and Lance soon had
them hooked to a hard charging roosterfish right
off the beach. However, after two good days,
Old Man Weather came a’calling and put a damper
on the rest of their trip.
If you haven’t come tight to a rooster on a fly
you are missing something special in the world
of fishing. Ask about Lance’s availability the
next time you’re making reservations.
Graduations Comes
to Buena Vista Beach Resort
Every year we host high school graduations or
grad trips and 2009 was no exception. We hosted
new grads from San Jose and Cabo San Lucas high
schools with various ceremonies including a mass
in the Hotel Chapel, a special dinner on the
hotel terrace, a big nighttime fire on the beach
plus various games and pool activities during
the day. There were 25 teens from San Jose and
32 from Cabo San Lucas.
Our entire staff and the Valdez Family wishes
Good Luck and Godspeed to all the new
graduates.
Filming at Hotel
BVBR
We enjoyed the visit of Tim Smith, who
came all the way from the New York State. Tim
maintains a very popular website for his films
and great documentaries.
Take a look a look.
Mark Davis, from Big Water Adventure was
here early May. He has been here filming in
September, twice already, so I encouraged him to
come during early Spring for the experience.
This May visit he caught and filmed some 30
different species. It’s a great show. Be sure
to see it.
And our old amigo Dan Hernandez joined us
for the 13th year with fellow
anglers. There were 27 guests from all over the
US of A who fished in a two day contest. Dan and
his gang made a substantial donation of clothes
to local church; while their tournament saw many
prizes including a return trip to the resort.
Groups
Dean Miller and Brian Bisk,
from Salt Lake City, who are in the construction
services business, hosted 32 guests - mostly
from Utah - at the hotel. It is an incentive
trip turn into a friends getting together to
fish and have Fun. They even have a small three
days fishing tournament.

We sent a bus to the airport for everyone, had a
theme every night with tacos, seafood, a Mexican
Buffet Night and closed with a traditional
Mexican carne ‘asada’ out in the patio. Winner
of their little tournament received a return
trip to hotel. We like to thank them for
coordination their visit and a special thank to
Brian, Dean and of course Mr. Bill Bohel
from
Wall 2 Wall Annual Fishing Trip
R.E Hazard,
aka Sr. Togo was joined by family and
friends for his 87th birthday
and a great week of fishing, diving, snorkeling,
ATVing, and more with a terrific party to
celebrate Sr. Togo. Here’s to many more!
Our good friends from the King Harbor Yacht
Club, from Redondo Beach, Calif. joined us
for their annual billfish tournament. This
year’s president Mr. Don Button
coordinated all of the details for a great trip
and tournament. It is a great private tournament
where more than just a competition of skills it
is a way to come down and relax while fishing.
These guys fish a lot and are really good at it,
but coming South of the Border Down Baja Way
gives them an opportunity to relax, swim, have a
margarita or two and chill out.
In early spring we attended a trade show in
Monterrey, Mexico, and met muchos
fishermen at the show, among them Mr. Rico
Peña, who organized a group of 28 friends,
most of them new to saltwater fishing. Most of
them are bass fisherman, which is prevalent in
that part of Mexico. Everyone had a Great Time,
and we were happy to host them.
Also we hosted three more groups from Los Mochis,
David Robles, Ramon Rojo Jose Ruiz and
Fernando Velderrain. They come across on
their yachts (40- to 70-footers.) They also had
our special arrangement for each of their group,
with Esaul cooking lobsters and prime USDA
steaks they brought.
Return Guests
(help here please)
We would like to briefly open our hearts and say
a great big ‘thank you’ to all our growing
family of guests. We more than realize that in
times like these you can go just about anywhere;
therefore we appreciate even more the support
from all of you that have visited us this year.
The hotel staff and my family thank you for your
patronage.
I normally like to mention at least most of our
return guests from their resent trip, but since
this year close to 85% of our guests are return
guests. I don’t want to miss mentioning anybody
and that is why I am skipping that part on this
newsletter. We present this fact to our staff in
order to motivate them and let them know that we
assume that we are doing something right and
that they should keep it up! We couldn’t do it
with your support, thank you for coming back!
